Our Promised Prophet

Today we celebrate the advent of our Promised Prophet. Prophets spoke throughout the Old Testament to give God's word to Israel and to lead them in God's way. God told Moses that one day the Promised Prophet would come and be greater than he. Today, we see how Jesus not only answered the prophecies, but answered the position as the Promised Prophet.

How much of you needs to be renewed?

Why is abiding in Jesus so important? What is the endgame? It may be shocking to come to the realization that our personal salvation makes up only a little percentage of the content of the New Testament. Most of what Paul, James, Peter, and John write about centers around our need to be renewed after salvation. This is a process we refer to as sanctification. Today, we look at Ephesians 4 and ask the question, "How much of you needs to be renewed"?

Jesus calls us to abide in Him. One of the main ways we are to do this is through our relationship with the Word of God. But we can't have a healthy relationship with the Word of God if we can't trust the Word of God. Today we will learn from Dr. Daniel Wallace's study of New Testament manuscripts to see if we can trust in what we have today. The Word and its message has been preserved amazingly for thousands of years. There is no other ancient book for it to be compared to and no other message that can change history as it has. This is a book we can trust and abide in!

When Debt and Life get reconciled

What do we do with what we have? The truth that Proverbs reveals is that the minority of the world controls the majority of wealth. And we use that to get drunk on idols and become even more in debt and enslaved to sin while the rest of the world starves in want. But it’s not too late to respond to the grace offered by Proverbs and the grace offered by the one true wise King Jesus. When we are reconciled, our hearts are at peace and our money and lives are used for His fulfilling purpose! Is it time we exchange our debt for abundant life in Him?

The Gospel Lived Out

What is the book of Romans about? Paul's life. What was Paul's life about? Living out the Gospel of Jesus to the world. Paul wraps up  his letter to the Romans  with a call to follow his life as he follows the life of Jesus. Paul directly challenges the Church at Rome to become partners with him in the Gospel of Jesus. As we finish reading the book of Romans together, we have to ask ourselves - are we living out the book of Romans together? What are our lives about?

Paul has backed us into a corner to face the truth of who we are.  Paul is used to the typical response at this point.  He knew we would start to shift blame and skirt responsibility.  Today Paul addresses the common arguments that come from those trying to deny the gospel of Jesus.  His point is not to shame us but to help us get to the point of giving up and recognizing our need of a savior.

Failing Law School

After building an airtight case against our sinfulness Paul anticipates a few arguments we are all prone to. Paul had just made his point that our hearts are sinful and a just God has to hold us accountable. But are we really "that bad." We often feel that goodness is a sliding scale on which we believe ourselves to be good enough. Today Paul takes us to Law School and shows us that our relativism, perfectionism, and sincerity all fail in God's school of law.

Our Hearts are Broken

The wrath of God is upon us because of our sinful hearts! Not an exciting message… but something we need to hear. We can not know the good news without understanding the bad news. We can not respond to amazing grace if we don’t see how broken and undeserving we are. This passage is often used to point out other peoples sin. But what we find today is that Paul uses this example to raise all of our understanding of each of our desperately broken hearts.

The Gospel Calls us to Be ALL IN

When we read Romans through the filter of our personal salvation story we miss the point of the letter. The Gospel we find in the letter of Romans is bigger, deeper, and more powerful than just a brief outline of salvation. As Paul writes this letter he unfolds the truth that the Gospel is a timeless encounter between the God of the universe and sinful humanity that can’t help but pull the reader into the story of the transformative pursuit of the Gospel. This is a Gospel that calls us all to BE ALL IN.

We live in a world and culture that finds offense around every corner. There is always something to be offended by, angry about, or passionately debating with all our enemies and friends. But is that the way Jesus leads us to live? Today we deconstruct the thought that we are commanded to live in righteous anger. Today we wrap up our Dwell series with Psalm 63. In this Psalm, David passionately declares his love and worship of God. David’s ability to live in this state of mind shaped everything about his life. Living in praise shaped his posture and perspective through life’s hardest circumstances. When we learn to dwell in God’s presence we begin to live the the life we were made for.

God’s Call to Sound Doctrine and the Hidden Strategy

Titus is one of the most undervalued books in the New Testament. Paul calls Titus to reestablish order and appoint Elders to a church that was plagued with worldly issues. When we get to see the relationship between Paul and Titus we realize that the hidden strategy is discipleship. Titus is little known and not talked about much in Christian circles but he was a man of great love, maturity, dedication and commitment to God. In this book, we see how good doctrine opens the way for right living. Oh how we need this truth today.

The Fundamentals

The faith of the church in Rome was known throughout the world. Paul wrote to them with hope and anticipation to meet them one day and use this body to spread the Gospel further than it had gone before. He also knew of some division amongst the Jewish and Gentile believers in Rome. It was for these reasons that Paul wrote to the church in Rome his most complete explanation of the Gospel. Even still today, this letter serves as one of the greatest ways to know the fundamental truth of the Gospel of Jesus from beginning to end. It is as imperative for believers today to know this letter as it was for the original recipients in Rome a couple thousand years ago.

Turning From Idols

Many of us are like Thomas.  We need to see it before we believe it.  But what we find today is that our believing is often found in seeing the good news in someone else’s life.  Thomas was challenged by the resurrection of Jesus.  This challenge resulted in an unexplainable and beautiful peace.  This peace became the source of people seeing the good news through his life!  Do people see the resurrection of Jesus in your life?

Have You Seen the Risen King?

Today is the day that we celebrate Jesus’ greatest miracle.  The day our tears and fears turn to joy and confidence.  The day that Mary and the Disciples saw the Risen King for themselves!  On this day Jesus demonstrated His grace and delivered them with the truth of who He is.  When we see the Risen King, He meets us in our tears and takes us from our fears!  Have you seen the Risen King?

Only the King Could Carry this Weight

Have you ever owed a large debt? In this passage, we see the culmination of Jesus' work on earth and the fulfillment of several prophecies. "It is finished." Within this one statement is the climax of the Gospel story and the completion of a work began by God all the way back in Genesis. His work is finished. The debt for our sin has been paid in full.

At just the right time, Jesus did what only He could do. He laid down His life for us. He told His disciples “my hour has come.” No one takes my life from Me; I lay it down freely.  He told Pilate “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given to you from above.”  Jesus made it clear… This is my demonstration to the world.  I lay my life down for you. What is our response to this demonstration of love and sacrifice from Jesus?

As we set our eyes towards Resurrection Sunday we move through a season of contemplation.  Who are we and who is our heart following?  Every time we read John 18 two disciples capture our attention.  How often do we consider how similar we are to Judas and Peter?  Jesus calls us to follow Him but we often find ourselves consumed with treasures, running ahead of Jesus, or hiding in the shadows.  If we want to see abundant life we have to die to these tendencies and truly make Jesus the Risen Lord.

An Invitation to New Life
